The Department of History forms an integral part of the social sciences stream of the College. It was started in 1956 as a UG programme with an enrolment of 6 students under the guidance of Rev. Mother Fernanda, the first Principal and HOD of History. Now there are 210 students for the course. Besides Rev. Mother Fernanda, other faculty members were Sr. Zinha, Prof. Eunice George, Prof. Rosamma Joseph and Prof. Juliet Stephen. Prof. Daisy Soman, Prof. Mariamma Francis and Dr. Sr. Annette joined the Department during the 1960s. Mrs. Geetha, Mrs. Vimala Menon, Mrs. Padma Sankar, Mrs. Clara Simon, Mrs. Jolly Raju, Mrs. Agnes Christy and Mrs. Indu Rajasekhar joined the Department later. Now the Department has two permanent faculty and three guest faculty. Mrs Sandya A K is the present Head of the Department and Ms. Shweta George joined the Department as permanent faculty in June 2022. Ms. Aparna M. Nath serves as the guest faculty for History, Ms. Jitty Elsa George serves as the guest faculty for Economics and Ms. Mary Jasmine is the guest faculty for Political Science.
The Department is also highly committed to the progress of society and encourages its students to actively participate in community activities and tries to utilize its student strength for developmental programs. The Department continued the tradition of providing help to the students of St. Sebastian L P School for their overall development. The Department has initiated many innovative techniques of learning and offers certificate courses, and capacity enhancement programmes to its students. Organizing seminars, talks and career guidance classes, arranging educational tours to places of historical importance, and celebrating days of national and international importance are the regular activities of the Department. Every year the Department organizes exhibitions, intercollegiate elocution and quiz competitions. Throughout the history of the Department, the students have maintained their academic and non-academic excellence by securing ranks and prizes. Students secured First Rank in the university examination in the years 2011 and 2019.
The Department has a history and heritage Museum which has a good collection of stamps, coins and models, which constitute the source of information for the study. The Department has continued the tradition of collecting antiques from the students and the beneficiaries. The museum is well maintained with regular collection and preservation of antiques and artifacts. The Department also has a strong Alumni Association which supports all the co-curricular activities of the department and provides necessary help to the needy students.
