Department of Chemistry

Overview

Post Graduate Department of Chemistry is one of the vibrant departments in St. Joseph's College for Women, Alappuzha situated in Block B of the College. Department of Chemistry was established in 1954. Mrs. Saraswathy Nair and Sr. Genevieve D'silva were the teaching faculty. B.Sc. Chemistry was started in 1957. The first batch of B.Sc. Chemistry students came out successfully in 1960.

The department has state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities in terms of well-equipped laboratories with modern instruments and well-furnished and spacious classrooms. The Department caters to one core, four complementary undergraduate students and postgraduate students. 

The year 1998-99 saw the inception of UGC-sponsored job-oriented degree course for clinical nutrition and dietetics, with chemistry as one of the main subjects. In the academic year 2020 - 21 Department of Chemistry promoted as Post Graduate Department.

At present, the department is well-equipped with young and talented teachers who strive to bring perfection in everything. The department was sponsored by DST-FIST.  The well-equipped research lab allowed us to mobilize resources for the research. 

The Department offers various certificate courses to enrich the curriculum namely 'Instrumentation and Analytical Techniques', 'Initiation to Innovation' and 'Step into Research' for students to improve their career competency. Also, Department focuses on the personality development of the first-year students by providing them with a Skill Development Programme.
